HCMS helps Haiti
HCMS’s Haiti relief donation for the Hands and Feet Project was hugely successful. Hancock County Middle School was able to raise a grand total of $1038.00. The activities that took place last week were dress-up days which raised $291.00, $193.00 for the goat kissing contest (which Mary Jane Newton won), $274.00 for a sixth grade dodge ball tournament, and $280.00 staff donations. We are so proud of the Cougar family and their willingness to give so generously to a country in so much need. Thank you all for your help and donations to the children’s village in Jacmel, Haiti.
We appreciate and thank each person who gave or helped us with these efforts!

HCMS Bad Weather Procedures
HANCOCK COUNTY MIDDLE SCHOOL
100 STATE ROUTE 271 SOUTH
LEWISPORT, KY 42351
PROCEDURES FOR BAD WEATHER
PLEASE SAVE THIS IMPORTANT INFORMATION
1. On bad weather mornings please listen to the local radio or television broadcasts regarding the opening of school. The secretary does not arrive to answer the phone until 7:30 a.m. on regular school mornings. When there is a 1-hour delay the office telephone will be answered at 8:30 a.m., and when there is a 2-hour delay the phone will be answered at 9:30 a.m. We get an unusual number of calls on mornings when there is a late start because of bus problems. PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL TO ASK IF SCHOOL IS IN SESSION UNLESS YOU DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO A TV OR RADIO – WE ALWAYS NEED THE PHONE LINES OPEN IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.
2. If there is a one or two hour delay for students, staff is also on a delayed schedule because conditions are unsafe for buses and car traffic. This means there will be no adult supervision in the building and that the building may still be locked. Parents who need to go to work at the regular time need to have a plan for how they will handle any weather related delayed openings. Students cannot be dropped off before the building is open and staff is present.
ON A 2-HOUR DELAY NO CAR RIDER SHOULD ARRIVE BEFORE 9:00 A.M. IN CASE OF A 1-HOUR DELAY NO CAR RIDER SHOULD ARRIVE BEFORE 8:00 A.M. PLEASE DO NOT DROP CHILDREN OFF AT SCHOOL WHEN THE WEATHER IS BAD UNLESS YOU ARE CERTAIN THAT SCHOOL WILL BE OPEN.
3. Please have a plan for where your child should go in the event school is called off early. Make sure your child understands these plans. Decisions are often made as the weather changes rapidly. There are not enough phone lines to allow each child to call home before the buses leave the school. Please try not to call the school in these circumstances as it is often hard to get through before students leave the building. If school is cancelled early, all afterschool events and practices are cancelled automatically.

Happy New Year
The Biever family recuperated from our Christmas break (Todd and Zane were sick, Trent struggled with the lack of routine, and I broke my elbow - the short list of highlights!) Needless to say I was very excited to think about starting back to school - especially with the big UK victory over UL Saturday!
As we begin the spring semester, I was thinking about how fast the spring usually flies by - but this year it seems that the fall passed quickly as well. HCMS has exciting renovation plans for our cafeteria beginning in late winter and will continue through the summer. So, more than ever, I am hoping for NO snow and especially NO ICE!!!
Our first week back is somewhat slow in terms of extracurricular activities. Our boys play at home tomorrow evening at 5:30 v/s South Spencer.
Next week we have our monthly SBDM meeting at 5:30 in the media center. Thursday evening we have a home basketball game at 5pm v/s Breckenridge County. Friday evening we have our first school dance of 2010 from 7:30-10pm.
There will be no school on Monday January 18, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.
I sure hope the holidays were a happy and restful time for you all. As we gear up for the second semester, I know things will get busy fast. As always, if you need anything feel free to email or phone me!
Have a great day and a happy new year!

Tomorrow morning
Parents and Friends,
The HCHS band competed very successfully at the regional competition this weekend. They were one of few bands which received a distinguished rating. They compete at the state level this weekend.
To recognize our Hornet band and share their accomplishments with the student body, our entire student body will join the high school students at the football stadium tomorrow at 9am to watch the band complete their award winning performance.
Each teacher explained this to students today and advised them to wear hats/jackets as it will be cool in the morning. The program will last approximately 20 minutes. We will not be outdoors a great of time, however, it will be cool.
Thanks
Gina Biever

Fall Break and Beyond!
Fall break arrived so quickly, where did the first nine weeks go? When I say that at home my husband always says, hold on, it will be Christmas before you know it! I guess it is true, time flies when you are getting older!
Every student received a report card before the break. The second nine week period officially began on Monday October 12, so we have eight weeks left before the next report card.
School resumes on October 26. We start the week with two girls basketball games on Monday and Tuesday both at home. Our 6th and 7th grade students have an assembly on Thursday at 1:45 in the gym on the science behind dance. We end the week with scoliosis screenings for 6th and 8th grade students only.
Our fundraiser ends on Tuesday October 27, 2009 - the Tuesday we return. I am very hopeful that everyone has supported HCMS, if not through selling items, by at least purchasing something. We tried to sell items, that were practical and useful - foods etc... We really need a successful fundraiser to support our PTO projects which include, paying students for AR points, PTO fun day, purchasing books for the library, and enhancing technologies and programs for the classroom.
Tuesday November 3, will be our picture retakes and group pictures.
Tuesday November 10 we will go to the high school for the annual Veteran's Day Assembly.
Monday November 16 PTO Meeting and Conferences. The meeting will begin at 6pm with conferences to follow immediately.
I hope you are enjoying the break and look forward to seeing everyone again next week!
